Today's mail call is from Best Sharpening Stones and it's the best item you can get for flattening stones and creating a slurry with no added compounds you can get. It's a 6 by 2 inch Ultra Sharp II 600 grit diamond plate which was very inexpensive at $24.90 shipped. I would have gotten either the DMT or Atoma version if I had more funds available but these days, you get what you can get and it looks like I got a lot for my money too:

The diamond lapping plates you see on various websites are simply too expensive for most people's budgets in general. These small diamond honing plates are a much better and more affordable choice and much easier to replace if something goes wrong with it or if you happen to drop and break it for some odd circumstance. For producing a slurry I highly recommend getting the 1,200 grit diamond honing plate or the little DMT ski stone (fine grit).
